Fake degreeI just heard a story a couple days ago of a friend who was refused re-entry in to Japan after his trip to Thailand. He was told that his visa was revoked because he did not have the proper credentials required by his employer to sponsor him. When he called to ask about it, his boss told him they found out his degree was a fake and had to report it to the authorities.

Just to let you know, this eikaiwa is one of the big four in Japan.

To be stable in Japan as an English teacher, you will need to have a Masters. A Masters of Applied Linguistics TESOL is the best choice. I’m getting mine in Education (M.ed.) with an emphasis in technology. I’m thinking the technology background will help me in the future. There will be lots of TESOL degrees out there in the future.

Here is a flyer that is going around Kobe in hopes of starting a group about using Second Life. I’m hoping this will spread the word about the use of social networking and virtual worlds in education in Japan.

If you are interested in attending a meeting, add a comment, or email me at mike[at]professormerryman.com. Hope to see you at the next meeting.

I made my first movie in Second Life today. It’s a tour of the island. Take a look. It’s nothing special, but it shows how we can video our lessons for archiving. Students will be able to have access to their lessons after taking them.

Recording lessons on video is not exactly possible at the moment due to file sizes and the amount of time it takes to edit and upload, but we are able to record voice and text chat for students.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could have a live show with an audience from around the world? Wouldn’t it be great if I co-hosted the show with someone from Korea so we could talk about the differeces between Japan and Korea? Well that’s exactly what’s going to happen tonight (9:00PM JST and 4:00AM PST).

We’re going to have a weekly/bi-weekly show broadcast from English Village with hosts Professor Merryman and Fire Centaur. The show will discuss what’s happening at English Village as well as topics of interest in Asia. The shows will be syndicated here on GinJ and three or four other websites.

Look for our first episode coming in the next few days. :-)

PS: Logo design by yours truly.

logo_256.jpgOK. So I’ve been spending the last couple few weeks head down in Second Life learning everything there is to know about teaching English and running an island. I can honestly say, Fire Centaur and I have put together quite a program. Fire’s technical ability and my academics and web background have really come together well. We’re getting ready for a grand reopening this February of English Village.

The title of this post is “New Sites” because I’d like to introduce a couple sites I’ll be putting a lot of time into over the next few months.

www.professormerryman.com
This blog will be used to document my research about teaching English in Second Life. As you might know, I’ll be teaching with Second Life this coming April at my university with about 100 students. These pilot classes, and the data and feedback that results, will be used to give a presentation at a teachers convention in the Fall. The department heads will also be attending. If all goes well, virtual teaching will be inaugurated.

students.professormerryman.com
Students will be using this site to for resources and communication. Somewhat similar to Gaijin-in-japan.com, I will have live weekly podcasts from English Village with my partner, a message box, forum, maybe games and various resources for learning English (if I have enough time to do all of this, of course).

eslteacherlink.com/moodle
This is our Moodle/Sloodle installation. Moodle is a Learning Management System (LMS) that helps in running a school. Sloodle is the link between Moodle and Second Life. Moodle + SL = Sloodle. This site is where students will register for classes, partake in activities, reference archived lessons, and communicate in SL via the web without having to go in-world.

SOOOO much more is planned, and we hope it will be a success. If you would like to attend one of our events or know someone who is interested in taking English lessons, send ‘em over to English Village. We’ll show you a good time. Did I mention we have hovercrafts, a movie theater and a dance club?

I’m in Second Life gearing up to open an “English Learning Co-op”. I just need a few more weeks to finish writing the curriculum and admin stuff and for my partner to implement last minute technical details. Stay tuned. I’ll have more info in next week’s podcast.

Can you imagine teaching English in a 3D world? How about studying Japanese in Japan? Have you ever wished you could be big buff and strong or sexy, slim and beautiful? You can do it all in Second Life, if you want to.
