Here it comes...

logo_256.jpgOK. So I’ve been spending the last couple few weeks head down in Second Life learning everything there is to know about teaching English and running an island. I can honestly say, Fire Centaur and I have put together quite a program. Fire’s technical ability and my academics and web background have really come together well. We’re getting ready for a grand reopening this February of English Village.

The title of this post is “New Sites” because I’d like to introduce a couple sites I’ll be putting a lot of time into over the next few months.

www.professormerryman.com
This blog will be used to document my research about teaching English in Second Life. As you might know, I’ll be teaching with Second Life this coming April at my university with about 100 students. These pilot classes, and the data and feedback that results, will be used to give a presentation at a teachers convention in the Fall. The department heads will also be attending. If all goes well, virtual teaching will be inaugurated.

students.professormerryman.com
Students will be using this site to for resources and communication. Somewhat similar to Gaijin-in-japan.com, I will have live weekly podcasts from English Village with my partner, a message box, forum, maybe games and various resources for learning English (if I have enough time to do all of this, of course).

eslteacherlink.com/moodle
This is our Moodle/Sloodle installation. Moodle is a Learning Management System (LMS) that helps in running a school. Sloodle is the link between Moodle and Second Life. Moodle + SL = Sloodle. This site is where students will register for classes, partake in activities, reference archived lessons, and communicate in SL via the web without having to go in-world.

SOOOO much more is planned, and we hope it will be a success. If you would like to attend one of our events or know someone who is interested in taking English lessons, send ‘em over to English Village. We’ll show you a good time. Did I mention we have hovercrafts, a movie theater and a dance club?
