I kind of knew this would happen. Can you believe it? Looks like Abe was bullied one too many times. How do you think this will bode for the image of Japan; the leader stepping down because the Cabinet doesn’t like him? Can you imagine the coach of a major sports team stepping down because the players don’t like him? What will the world think? Who’s the leader of this country? Who should the rest of the world call in order to get foreign diplomacy taken care of?
This decision by Abe REALLY hurts what little confidence I had in this country. It looks to me that Japan will have an image of simply being a money tree with an admission charge for the next 30 years. Can there ever be a true leader in this country? When will the time come when one “nail” sticks out and grabs the “hammer” by two hands?

I don’t think it was his cabinet as much and the general populace that he bowing out for. You forget to mention the series of scandals that his four of his cabinet members to resign (one by suicide). He’s an uncharismatic 3rd generation politician who bit off more than he could chew. The timing was abrupt, but his days were already numbered. Maybe this is his was of saving face. Get a new PM in there before this session is out. I say hats off to him for having the balls to step down. Koizimi was a tough act to follow. Though polarizing, he did have chutzpah.

I agree with Freakshow, Koizumi was a hard act to follow. As a matter of fact some LDP members want Koizumi back. Honestly, I think Abe had planned this type of exit, after losing. He didn’t want to be like other LDP PM who resigned after losing. Overall, the public was tired of him, so he had to go. The problem is we are probably going to get Aso-san next. What an improvement!!

I heard Abe was hospitalized after reading Mike’s remarks here on gaijin-in-japan. I hope you’re proud, didn’t know that guest 4562 was the man in charge, did ya?

I’m not big on politics, as you can probably tell from the post, but what I do know is that Japan is not able to see the sun through the clouds. My point is not to demean the country but to send a message that will one day hopefully hit home. In my classes I teach critical thinking skills all the time. This is another classic case where the whole is governed by the lesser whole. If there are 10 people driving the car and one has to make a decision when to turn the wheel, how many turns do you think it will take until the car crashes? I don’t think it matters if we lose one driver, we need to hire someone who can take over the wheel.

Most Japanese I have talked to recently didn’t like Abe. I think most of hie intial popularity was because of his wife. The news is now saying Fukuda or Aso, but who knows what type of deal is being made behind closed doors. You must be logged in to post a comment. |
