Here it comes...

Living in Japan the past seven years being married to a Japanese and having sex when there is a full moon gives me a little different perspective on this issue. This long post is in response to the news today on Japanese sex slaves and the US House of Representatives vote.

Why did the government feel the soldiers needed women?

  • To increase the morale of the troops.
  • To prevent their soldiers from raping women in the territories that they controlled.
  • To more efficiently prevent the spread of STDs.
  • To prevent leakage of military secrets.

Do you believe the soldiers were at fault or the government? Do you believe the soldiers were “raping” these women? Do you believe the soldiers were pillaging the villages, taking women as their sex slaves?

=====
17 January 1992 (Wikipedia)

Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa. “What we should not forget about relationship between our nation and your nation is a fact that there was a certain period in the thousands of years of our company when we were the victimizer and you were the victim. I would like to once again express a heartful remorse and apology for the unbearable suffering and sorrow that you experienced during this period because of our nation’s act.” Recently the issue of the so-called ‘wartime comfort women’ is being brought up. I think that incidents like this are seriously heartbreaking, and I am truly sorry” (Policy speech at the occasion of the visit to the Republic of Korea. 宮澤喜一内閣総理大臣の大韓民国訪問における政策演説(アジアのなか、世界のなかの日韓関係). 外交青書36号,383-388. qtd in The World and Japan Database Project website, Institute of Oriental Culture, University of Tokyo, Retrieved from here.)

My wife says there are two stories: one is that the government provided women, two is that the other countries entrepreneurs provided women to make money. The soldiers aren’t involved, and it’s sad. Besides, she says, the uniforms were too bulky. Hmmmmm, I think there might have been other physical problems and such involved. But we won’t get into that here.

Japan is an island. The religions and belief systems are based on harmony and family. The work ethic for men is/was to provide for the benefit of the whole. Sex was to propagate and to please. Geisha provided pleasure, not only in sexual favors but mostly in companionship. The nape of her neck and the unraveling of the kimono was far more erotic than the act of sex. These days, russian hostess bars is as close as you’ll come to anything even remotely erotic. Most pleasures come from a soap club or or or…I don’t know.

In times of war, the psychological effects of being taken away from your island nation, family, friends and local bar and then put into a war meant making changes.

This is where my opinion comes in: I think the soldiers would have screwed a tree if they had the chance. But following orders and reporting back to barracks gave them some sort of regiment in their. A way to keep focused by doing there job and doing it well with honor. That meant kill. kill. kill. Death absorbed them. Having sex with the naive country girls who understood enough Japanese to get in the soldiers pants and steal some money meant risk to the government. How could the Japanese government keep soldiers from being taken advantage of? Stupid soldiers do stupid things. So do stupid government leaders. But they’re doing what they think is in the best interest of the country.

Next. How to apologize for an atrocity? Have you ever seen a Japanese apologize for horrific wrong doing? For dishonoring the nation? It’s not taken lightly. This country is not brought up on Christ’s forgiveness. They don’t simply say sorry, pay some money, build a monument and try to forget it. It lives on in stories. It’s better to let the rain take it away than sweep it under the blanket (my saying). Unfortunately, Japan is too late. The country has been caught out and now needs to profusely apologize. Why not make a stance against rape and women’s rights at the same time. Japan is only 30 years behind. This would be a good time to make some changes.

What I find interesting, is Lady Z is always saying how here in the states, no one wants to take responsiblity for things they srew up. However in Japan they are quick to say sorry and bend over backward to make up for it. Eg: Something brought in the “Supa” is bad, they are sorry sorry sorry and bring a gift to the person’s home. BUT.. in this case it is deny deny deny.
Lady Z never heard of Nanking or those other places, but was quick to talk about Nazi wrongs. I had to explain it to her, 1. Japan was on the Nazi side, 2. Nanking was only one of the war crimes the Japanese did and do not speak about. I also explained that yeah, Japan is not the only country that has done such things. The good Ole USA of has it’s share of Humanity wrongs as well, Vietnam, Cambodia, the American Natives…people are people, give them a chance they will show their F’dup side when they can get away with it…sad or what!

I say ” let do the time warp again “

Interesting isn’t it Zen. The things our governments hide from us is astounding. Isn’t it funny that CNN and BBC are the only world news broadcasting systems in these two major countries. The fact that they look similar also scares me.

On a side note, we can’t expect our wives to know what’s going on in the world. Hell, ask most Americans if they know where Wisconsin is on the map and they’ll say, “I dunno.” Ask a Japanese and they’ll probably be able to tell you.
