Gaijin-in-JapanBlogging direct from Kobe, Japan
Gaijin isn't a bad word. There just isn't any
other word to describe us. And besides, I'm different and I like it that way. Why else would I decide to leave San Francisco and live here forever? So that I can eat good food? Maybe. |

I think it depends on who is reporting to others higher than themselves; OR who has an interest in getting the transfer. I was at a meeting today where there were three guys who thought they new what they were doing. Each of them had to decide on what the design of their company website would be. One of them was a geek, so I thought he would be the best choice for who should make the decisions. As I sat there listening to their desires, I wondered again and again who the decision maker was. In America, it’s pretty common knowledge amongst sales people that talking to the decision maker is the first priority–not in Japan. Everyone is considered the decision maker until the time is right. I listened and then posed my questions like, “So who is your target user? Tanakasan, should I be asking you this question?” Didn’t work. Or maybe, “Will you require Worldnet Japan to host your site, Mr. Suzuki?” Again, another deflection. I couldn’t ever figure out who exactly knew what. It was like one person knew how much to spend and the other how to implement. Each time I meet with Japanese to do a needs analysis it always ends up as me talking to one other guy with six to twelve eyes. You must be logged in to post a comment. |
