Gaijin-in-JapanBlogging direct from Kobe, Japan
Gaijin isn't a bad word. There just isn't any
other word to describe us. And besides, I'm different and I like it that way. Why else would I decide to leave San Francisco and live here forever? So that I can eat good food? Maybe. |

If you live in a bigger city in Japan you might notice that it is somewhat rare to see someone you know on the street. I think this may be because many of us wear blinders. I teach around 200 students a week; of which maybe 30% are different every week. I’ve been teaching in the same city for the last 6 or 7 years and can honestly say that I have either recognized or been recognized maybe 20 times. Why? Is it me? Am I wearing blinders? Maybe it’s not me. Maybe people DO recognize me but neglect to say “Hi” for fear of speaking English. Hmmmm….
I'm sorry. It was my fault.:
